How it Works

CURRENTLY CLOSED TO NEW CLIENTS AND 2017 IS BOOKED.

I write and publish romantic and young adult fiction. They are also what I read and the genres I am most knowledgeable about in regards to industry standards. You are welcome to send me samples of another genre, but I reserve the right to politely decline. Erotic romance is welcome as long as there is heavy emphasis on the romance.
And a happy ending.

If you are interested in a Romancing the Beat Critique, please send me an email  (gwen at gwenhayes dot com) and attach the full manuscript of your novel (.doc, .docx, or .rtf, double spaced, 12 pt font, Times New Roman, .5" indent or similar formatting) and include the following in the body of the email:
  • Genre/ word count of finished story
  • Blurb
  • Any deadlines we might be working with
  • If you are shopping for an agent, go ahead and use your query in the body of the email instead--I'll let you know if it hooked me.

If we decide to go on together, we will schedule your pass or passes. Please plan your deadlines with lots of thinking room. I require two weeks of editing time per pass per 50k words, with at least two weeks in between. Rushing edits and revisions does not do your readers a service. Thinking time is really important for the editor and the writer. For more information regarding what each pass entails, please review the services and fees page

If you are self-publishing the work, I suggest hiring a good copy editor after incorporating any suggested changes. And a proofreader after that. Errors are often introduced during edit passes--so you really want to make sure you have fresh eyes looking at your work before you send it into the wild.

I cannot stress the need for copy edits and proofreads enough. Please read this great article by Courtney Milan that highlights the reasoning behind this emphasis.
